What follows are some of the highlights of the Executive Summary, but first a few observations. Describing Israel or Israeli policies in terms of apartheid has become more common in recent times, but has also provoked a strong backlash. It is interesting to note, therefore, that this study is a measured assessment written by legal experts on the specific ways in which Israel's policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) can be considered to be 'colonialism' and/or 'apartheid', as defined by international law. It is not, quite clearly and openly, saying Israel=South Africa.

The new report was carried out by the Middle East Project of the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa.

The Role of Internet and Mobile in Israel’s Gaza Strip Bombing

On December 27 2008, Israel launched a series of air strikes, known as Operation Cast Lead, against targets in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 400 Palestinians and injuring more than 2200 over the week (Wikipedia/ NowPublic/ Mahalo/ Global Voices/ CrisisWire).

The Israel-friendly Help Us Win blog (Facebook/ Twitter) says that “the war is not only on the ground - but also in the international media” and encourages Israel’s supporters to “tell Israel’s side of the story” and “ensure that the international coverage of the Campaign Against Hamas is balanced”.

In fact, the Israel propaganda machinery is in full flow to ensure that everyone gets to hear Israel’s side of the story. Campaigners have expressed dismay that a policeman acquitted of brutality last month will be in charge of security at next year's G8 summit in Italy.

Franco Gratteri was one of those in charge during the 2001 G8 meeting in Genoa, which was marred by violence.

While he was cleared of related charges, colleagues were convicted.

Mark Covell, who was beaten unconscious by police at Genoa, said he feared police had not learned lessons and violence would flare again next year.

Genoa 2001 became notorious for violent street clashes between anti-globalisation protesters and police, that left many people injured on both sides.

Thirteen police officers were convicted last month in connection with attacks on defenceless demonstrators at the Diaz School in Genoa in 2001. But Mr Gratteri and several other senior commanders were cleared of responsibility by the judge. -- /link/

There are at least five documents taking the form of White House press releases that detail the number and names of countries in the "Coalition of the Willing" that publicly supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. At one time, all five of these documents were archived on the White House web site.

Today, only three of these five documents can still be accessed in the White House archives. One of the missing lists was removed from the White House web site at some point in late 2004, and the other was removed between late 2005 and early 2006. These two "missing" lists represent earlier and smaller lists of coalition members.

The text of three of these five documents was altered at some point after their initial release, even though in most cases the documents still retained their original release dates and were presented as unaltered originals. These alterations to the public record changed the apparent number of countries making up the coalition, as well as the names of countries in the coalition. Dhaka -- Unlike the Baul statue circus a month ago, the group that came to smash Balaka Chattar/Biman Office statues (storks, also by Mrinal Haque) came near midnight. This time, no government officials, no advance “protest” in media, no advance anything. They worked quickly, with hammers. Other reports said “ramda”, but I tend to think that’s fear shorthand.

Then the police arrived. According to BdNews24, for the first fifteen minutes they did nothing. Then I suppose the “higher ups” decided whether to stop or allow, impede or accelerate. And then the police “swung into action.” Or, as Shamokal reports it, dhawa palta dhawa. Police wounded, attackers in custody, conveniently wearing white robes. Almost ready for their photo-op.

The hammers managed to get through the plaster legs, but stopped at iron rods.

I arrived after midnight. Lot of police vans. My CNG driver knew about it: “Ektu agei hangama hoise, oidike jaiben”. Helpful tour guide.

There are, according to the report, now more than 160 million users of the drug worldwide. "Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," according to the report. "Historically, there have only been two deaths worldwide attributed to cannabis, whereas alcohol and tobacco together are responsible for an estimated 150,000 deaths per annum in the UK alone."

The report, compiled by a group of scientists, academics and drug policy experts, suggests that much of the harm associated with cannabis use is "the result of prohibition itself, particularly the social harms arising from arrest and imprisonment." “We just saw a big ship,” the pirates’ spokesman, Sugule Ali, said in a telephone interview. “So we stopped it.”

The pirates quickly learned, though, that their booty was an estimated $30 million worth of heavy weaponry, heading for Kenya or Sudan, depending on whom you ask.

Mengistu lives in exile in Zimbabwe, given succour and protection by Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Mugabe considers Mengistu an ally following his support of Mugabe’s terror campaign in the Rhodesian bush war of the 1970s.

Mengistu initially lived in the upmarket Harare suburb of Emerald Hill, but in the last couple of years word has it that he now lives near to Kariba, preferring the bush life to the retrace in the cities.

Word also reached the watching world some three years ago that Mengistu was the mastermind behind the ‘urban slum clearance’ in Zimbabwe, now known as Operation Murambatsvina. --

The obvious difference is this: when white politicians go ethnic, they just look funny. When a black presidential contender does it, he looks foreign. And when the ethnic apparel in question is vaguely reminiscent of the clothing worn by Iraqi and Afghan fighters (at least to many Fox viewers, who think any headdress other than a baseball cap is a declaration of war on America), the image is downright frightening.

Nigeria is a mess, due to the combination of legions of legendarily corrupt politicians, buckets of oil money, and vast pools of neglected citizens. The Niger Delta, the wellspring of Nigeria's oil wealth, is particularly messy. It's where people, abandoned by their government, are living at a minimal subsistence level just outside the fences of the major oil company compounds, which sport European levels of convenience and lifestyle for their expatriate employees. I’m really just stunned by the fact that the government is not even attempting to avert the humanitarian crisis - there’s no talk of shelters, no talk of relief supplies, zero. They can sit and blame ODM all they want (though it seems to me both sides are willing to sacrifice innocent lives), but at minimum they have the resources to alleviate the suffering of those who have been displaced and they’ve done nothing. Have heard reports that Kikuyus in Eldoret are being offered GSU escort out of the area to Central Province - nothing about what happens when they get there and nothing about those people who’ve grown up in Eldoret and know no one in Central. "It's certainly a lot more likely that Microsoft violates patents than Linux does," said Torvalds, holder of the Linux trademark. If the source code for Windows could be subjected to the same critical review that Linux has been, Microsoft would find itself in violation of patents held by other companies, said Torvalds. [..]

The majority of people in Zimbabwe do not have
the luxury of an internet connection or a cell phone, and they rely on second or third hand information, constantly re-cycled and checked. On their way to work they walk past newspaper billboards broadcasting disinformation and blatant lies. If they are lucky enough to have a radio, the state controlled media brings more of the same to their ears.

Peter was indignant and said that the ban of public meetings was ridiculous and that both Zanu PF and the MDC should be free to meet as they please.

Indeed, worries got so big that now FOX has launched a conservative antidote, "The _ Hour News Show" which premiered this week. Now streaming on YouTube, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ran a piece featuring Daily Show clips and two pundits debating whether "therapeutic irony is rendering us politically impotent." Similar fears were fanned last year when news media had a fiesta with a questionable study by two academics which claimed that watching The Daily Show breeds cynicism and lowers young voters' "trust in national leaders." In September, The New York Times Magazine ran a savvy piece called "My Satirical Self" about a generation of satire in which Wyatt Mason describes how "ridicule provides a remedy for his rage." In 2003 in an interview with Bill Moyers, Moyers asks Jon Stewart: "I do not know whether you are practicing an old form of parody and satireor a new form of journalism. Stewart replies: "Well then that either speaks to the sad state of comedy or the sad state of news. I can't figure out which one. Yesterday at a concert I visited with my dad, I got quite obsessed spotting women with long hair.
But there were very few of them.

In The Netherlands like in some other western countries, breastcancer numbers have risen to epidemic scales. [Breastcancer Facts]

Consequences of breastcancer are dramatic. Many women die. Many women lose their breast/s.
In the case of a 'breast saving' operation, treatments of the not-so-funny kind follow: radiation therapy, chemo therapy after which (not in all cases) hormone blocking pills throw the patient into a too early forced meno-pause - a misleading term, no pause at all for five years.

I found myself in this last group since May '06, and now, after eight months, I'm just very, very tired.
And even with rising temperatures of climate change it's still too cold here to really enjoy my buddhisty baldness, and I am however unable to be flegmatic like a buddhist monk.

I have tried to keep http://Streamtime.org going, and in some way, my reading of the Iraqi blogs and other un/related sources kept me alive as well.

But after the crack of the Streamtime-site at the end of Dec. '06 I was under last toxic-attacks in the chemo therapy series and real + virtual reality were very far from my comfortable and safe under sea-level bed, where I instead enjoyed the heavy storms that blew over the low country last January.

Where I was, the sea is only separated from the land by the so-called 'fragile dune'. The storm blew the waves, the sea ate parts of the dunes, and the sand flew everywhere and covered the land. After the storms it looked as if it had been snowing. Everything was covered with the salty white layer of the fine sand.
Two days after I found many starfish on the beach.
So, why bother about web, or war?

However, against all odds, I am planning to get back to it all, but first I'll wait for HAIR!

Update:
Yes indeed! ... I was K.O. for a while. May have something to do with my shrunken cognitive functions, but now i am glad to announce that i'm nearly back on my feet again.

Spring will come.
